The doorway to Padungan

The sculpture of a cat in front of the doorway is to mark Kuching's reputation as Cat City. Kuching is cat in Malay language. However, you are not likely to see the feline anymore than elsewhere.

This doorway is the beginning of Padungan, an area with Chinese shophouses with their distintive architecture, dating back to the 1920s and 1930s. The shophouses along the road are typical examples of family-run business which still in operation today. Do find some restaurant and shop with local delicacies along your way.

Walk straight along Jalan Padungan right up to its junction with Jalan Central Timur to view the Great Cat of Kuching monument.
