The Bako National Park is Sarawak's oldest national park. It covers 2,742 hectares of a rugged sandstone peninsula to the east of the Bako River near Kuching. Bako contains a rich variety of wildlife like long-tailed macaques, silver-leaf monkeys, bearded pigs, leopard cats and giant lizards.

The rare Proboscis monkey can be found in this Borneo riverine forest. It can be distinguished by its enormous cucumber-liked nose.

Wave erosion at the base of the cliffs has carved many of the rocks into unusual sea arches and seastacks.

GETTING THERE:	Bako National Park is accessed via Kampung Bako, a picturesque fishing village, which is about 40 minutes drive from Kuching by road. Petra Jaya bus No.6 and regular minibuses (see Travel Connections) go to Kampung Bako. Taxi fare is RM 35 one-way. From Kampung Bako one has to take a boat to the park HQ. The boat ride is about 30 minutes. Boat hire is readily available at Kampung Bako. The one-way fare is RM 40 per boat (up to 5 people).
