Kuching > The Astana

The Astana

The Astana lies across the Sarawak River near the Malays Kampungs. It was actually three separate buildings connected into one by narrow passageways.

Past: This palace was built in 1870 by Charles Brooke, the second Rajah of Sarawak, as a bridal gift to his wife, the Ranee Margaret. It was a private residence of the second Rajah then.

Present: It is now the official residence of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, the Governor of Sarawak.

Sampan

GETTING THERE: It is located across the Sarawak River. Take a sampan from the Waterfront river bank at 20 sen per trip to cross the river. No visitors is allowed into the Astana. There are security guards at the front gate of the palace. Visit the Fort Marherita and a orchid garden nearby instead.
