Sarawak, the 'Land of Hornbills' is located on the northwestern edge of the exotic island of Borneo. It is the country's largest state forming part of East Malaysia. Sarawak is made up of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and native groups. The largest group being Ibans, once headhunters. Other native groups are Bidayuhs, Melanaus and Orang Ulu (upriver people).
Gawai is a thanksgiving festival held by the Ibans in June at the end of a bountiful rice harvest. During the festival, 'tuak' or rice wine and other traditional delicacies like bamboo rice are offered at 'open houses' in longhouses.
