Tabin is an enormous dipterocarp rainforest landscape in the eastern part of Sabah with a most diverse range of flora and fauna. It was declared a wildlife reserve because of the large numbers of animal species inhabiting its forest, including several which are highly endangered. With a protected forest area of 120,500 hectares, Tabin plays an important role as a dedicated group for the breeding of endangered wildlife and protected mammals in Sabah.

The 3 largest mammals of Sabah – the Borneo Pygmy elephant, Sumatran Rhinoceros and Tembadau are all found within Tabin. Orang utan and other primates are plentiful and there is a large variety of carnivores, including the Honey bear, and the rare Clouded leopard. The area also has herds of deer, wild boar, civet cats, red leaf monkeys pig tail macaque and long tailed macaque.

Tabin is a bird-watchers’s paradise. About 42 indigeneous families representing 220 species have been recorded here. And a large number of tropical plants thrive here, some species are known for their medicinal and therapeutic properties.

Mud Volcanoes Several mud volcanoes and salt-water springs can be found in Tabin. These are high in minerals of importance to animals and birds, so these area are frequently visited by the them and become an ideal locations to spot wildlife. Lipad mud volcano is the one nearest to the main base. The Lipad cafe is purposely built to serve as the gathering place for those who wish to enjoy a drink after a day of jungle ventures.

To relax, the rock pool which is located within easy reach from the resort, is an ideal place for picnic and other recreational activities.

Getting There

 By Air:

AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines provides daily flights ( 1 hour duration ) from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu. From Lahad Datu, about 1 hour drive on gravel road will take you to Tabin Wildlife Resort which is about 50km to the northeast of Lahad Datu on the Dent Peninsula.

By Road:

It takes about 7 hours from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu by driving car.

  • This is open throughout the year
  • The climate is warm and humid. A wet season can occur within November to January
