Sabah > Pulau Tiga "Survivor Island"

Pulau Tiga is an island situated in Pulau Tiga Park, located about 35 nautical miles southwest of Kota Kinabalu. It was the island where the popular TV programme "Survivor" was shot in 2001.

The meaning of Pulau Tiga, when translated from the Malay language, literally means " Island of Three". Three islands make up Pulau Tiga Park - Pulau Tiga, Pulau Kalampunian Damit or better known as “ Snake Island” and Pulau Kalampunian Basar.

There are small mud volcanoes that are now dormant but still spewing mineral-rich mud from the ground and is believed to contain natural healing elements for the skin and the tired body.

Several species of mammals, numerous birds (including the very rare megapode), a variety of reptiles and amphibians and hundreds of species of insects can be found on Pulau Tiga making it truly wild tropical island.

With only one resort on Pulau Tiga, you can guarantee a relaxed and tranquil dive holiday. The resort is an ideal retreat that offers opportunities to experience nature, become immersed in the beauty and serenity of the island. Pulau Tiga Resort offers PADI dive courses and many dive sites for the novice and experienced divers including some unexplored dive locations. A rich variety of marine life can be seen including nudibranchs, bamboo sharks, cuttlefish, marbled stingray and of course a visit to nearby “ Snake Island” guarantees sightings of banded sea snakes. The surrounding reefs are shallow with healthy coral and water visibility ranging from 6m to 20m.

This is a remote island - you can stay in touch with home via Satellite phone or local Sim card, however, there is no internet connection on the island or in the nearest town.

How to get there

Pulau Tiga Resort is situated about 35 nautical miles, on the southeast of Kota Kinabalu. To get there, you can either take a 2 hour journey from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Penyu by car, followed by a 25mins boat cruise to the island or take the easy way out and charter a boat from KK to the island itself. The Resort runs a boat service to and from Kuala Penyu twice daily, so you can get on and off the island if needed.
