Sabah > Kapalai Island

Between Sipadan and Mabul Island lies a sand bar known many years ago as Kapalai Island. Unfortunately, erosion has taken its toll and entire sections of reef have disappeared due to the effects of dynamite fishing in the past. However, it may be good news to exceptional and unusual creatures, such as Painted Frogfish, Ornate Ghost Pipefish and etc, which have managed to adapt to this new environment and, without competition from larger predators, have colonized the area.

Sipadan-Kapalai Resort is actually a water village style built above the water and her pretty bungalows hover over a clear lagoon full of fish and corals.

The underwater scene together with nearby Mabul offers some of the best “muck-diving” in the world. Rare subjects such as flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, sea moths, and mating mandarinfish are seen on a regular basis. Giant frogfish, ribbon eels, harlequin ghost pipefish and crab-eye gobies are seen on many of the dive sites.
The jetty dive itself has plenty to offer including leaf scorpionfish, pink-eye gobies, ambonian shrimps and the comical antics of the mantis shrimp. Other frequently seen creatures such as the crocodilefish, lionfish and scorpionfish are almost ignored as being too common!!
