What are the reasons to visit? A historic point to start off George Town heritage trail.
The Esplanade used to be called Padang Kota. Francis Light, a former Royal Navy midshipman and trader had landed on a point somewhere at Esplanade. A fort was then raised at the point of landing and Esplanade has been a important historic place since then. Where is it located? The Esplanade is situated along Light Street near the historical Fort Cornwallis. Surrounding it are colonial-era structures like the City Hall and Town Council. What it used to be? In the olden days, activitis like firing practice, soccer matches, cricket and lawn bowling. There were also Filipino groups known as Manila Band performing at the northeast corner of the field. Vendors selling hari pomade and combs would draw the crowd by screening free movies from a noisy projector and makeshift cloth screen. What it is today? Today, activities like big walks, sports, open air concerts, assemblies, New Year celebrations, Chap Goh Meh concerts, parades, sports and other public events are usually held here. Orange throwing competition is still an important event here during Chap Goh Meh. It is believed that by throwing the oranges into the sea, unwed women are going to get a good husband. What to do here? You can find day and night food stalls, a World War 1 memorial, basketball court, skating ring, "Millenium Plaza" and seafront promenade here. The cool grass, shady trees and sound of the sea is itself an attraction for people looking for a place to relax and rest. You can have a relaxing strolls, reading your favourite books, snooze under the shady trees, or even chat or even romance under the stars.
