Melaka (Malacca) > St. Francis Xavier Church
Francis Xavier's Church, of Gothic architecture, was built in 1849 by a French priest, Rev. Farve. It was a memorial to St. Francis Xavier, a Catholic missionary known as the 'Apostle of the East' for his work in spreading Roman Catholicism in South-East Asia during the sixteenth century. St Francis Xavier arrived in Malacca in 1545 and since then served the sick and the children there. However he died in the ship on his way to China in 1574. People in Malacca deeply mourn over his death. On the day of his funeral, it was believed that the saint has performed a miracle to stop the plague that had been causing many deaths. While this Gothic church is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, the statue of the saint is available at the St. Paul’s Church.
