Langkawi Island > KuahThe name Kuah is a Malay word meaning 'gravy' and is associated with an ancient legend of two battling giants who overturned a gigantic pot of curry at the sport where the town now stands Once a rustic town with a few streets, present day Kuah is a thriving centre of hotels and shopping-cum-business complexes, fortunately without the bustle of morden-day cities. Kuah offers a wide variety of duty-free goods such as tobacco, liquor, cosmetics and electrical items at attractive price.
Dataran Lang (Eagle Square), the brainchild of Malaysia's Prime Minister, this prominent, 19-acre landmark is major attraction to visitors disembarking at Kuah Jetty. The centrepiece of the site is a huge and splendid statue of the reddish brown eagle after which Langkawi is named. According to local folklore "Kawi" in old Malay means reddish-brown eagle and "Lang" is the shortened term for helang (eagle). Hence Langkawi is known as the “Eagle State” The tranquillity and soft, cool sea breezes make this picturesque spot a great place for leisurely strolls or a romantic dinner in one of the nearby restaurants.
