Kuala Lumpur > Market SquareMarket Square or Medan Pasar is situated between Pasar Besar and Lebuh Ampang. According to the locals, it has always been where the money is. It was once the large market and gambling sheds of Yap Ah Loy, headman of the Chinese community in the late 1800s. His house was located at the Lebuh Pasar Besar end of the Square. In 1882, Yap Ah Loy was ordered by Frank Swettenham to remove his gambling sheds but was allowed to rebuild his market. In 1907, the three-storey Neo-Classical shophouses are rebuilt with decorative plaster garlands, roof-top gables and balustrades by AC Hubback, a government architect. These days, banks like Mayban Finance Berhad and Clock Tower, which commemorate the coronation of King George IV, can be found at Market Square.
