Perak > IpohIpoh, also known as City of Bougainvilleas, has its name derived from the city's abundance of the flora. The name 'Ipoh' comes from 'Epau' tree (antiaris toxicaria), a colossal poisonous jungle tree that used to be very common in the area. Being the 3rd largest city in Malaysia, it is divided into two parts, Old Town and New Town by Kinta River. Ipoh, the capital of Perak, was transformed into a bustling town during the tin rush in 1877. Many chinese towkays came in to invest in shophouses, making it a predominantly Chinese town. Ipoh famous tourist destination include The Perak Tong, Sam Poh Tong, Kek Lok Tong, Ipoh Railway Station, Darul Ridzuan Museum, Birch Memorial Tower, Geological Museum & D.R. Seenivasagam Park.
Places of Interest Food Ipoh is renowned as the food capital of Perak. There aare a variety of Chinese food, Malay food, Indian food and other cuisines. The early Chinese immigrants brought in their cooking styles with them by introducing noodles, bean sprouts, bean curd and soy souce. Famous Chinese dishes found in Ipoh are Chicken Taugeh (bean sprout), Hainanese Chicken Rice and Hor Fun, rice or noodles in soup served with shredded chicken, bean sprouts and shallots.
A trip to Perak isn't complete without a taste of pomelos and seedless guavas. Pomelos are seedless citrus fruits usually the size of a soccer ball, and are grown exclusively in the state. Other succulent fruits include seasonal rambutan, mangosteens, mangoes and durians.
